After completing his Electrical engineering at NIT, Mysore, He did his M.Tech at IIT, Kanpur. Murthy started his career at IIM Ahmedabad as chief systems programmer and after that he started a company named Softronics and when that company failed after about an year, he joined PATNI computer systems in Pune. Murthy and six software professionals founded Infosys in 1981 with an initial capital of Rs. 10,000, which was provided by his wife Sudha Murthy.

The decision of coming back to Infosys was mainly due to the consequent fall in the overall revenue growth of the company.
